Bilbao destination guide
The 700 year old city of Bilbao is situated on the northern coast of Spain and has more than one million inhabitants.
With mild winters and warm summers, it is an ideal all year round holiday destination .

Bilbao has managed to strike a healthy balance between its old traditions and modern lifestyles. The city is full with restaurants offering the best in Basque cuisine. With an annual contest held each year, one of the most popular Basque customs is called Pintxo. You move from bar to bar, sampling a small glass of beer or wine, whilst trying the various appetisers on offer.

Bilbao's Fiesta is celebrated in August each year, with inhabitants and vistors celebrating for 9 days and nights. Along with the almost obligatory culinary delights, are fireworks, concerts and plays.

With the Guggenheim Museum, and many smaller art galleries, the city boasts a world renowned collection of modern art.Guggenheim Museum

For sport lovers, the city is also the home of Athletico Bilbao. This famous football team arouses strong affection within it's fans, who regard the team as 'los leones' - the lions. Their impressive stadium is known as 'la Catedral' (the Cathedral) and is another main symbol of the city.

Getting around the city is easy with the introduction of the Bilbao Metro underground system. The system has over 34 kilometres of track and 32 stations. Over 70 million passengers travel on the Metro each year. The award winning stations have impressive steel and glass facades. With a network of trams, buses and taxis that you may also use to travel around the city, there is no excuse not to visit the wonderful sights of Bilbao.

Bilbao actively encourages it's visitors to tour the city and take advantage of everything it has to offer. It has introduced a Tourist Card, available at tourist offices, with incentives to visit museums, restaurants, shops, shows and sporting events.

With over half a million visitors each year, you are always guaranteed a welcome in Bilbao. Why not see for yourself?
