Useful Information
In order to assist you, we have some recommendations from the Cheaper Ferries team to ensure that your ferry crossings go
without a hitch.
- Make your ferry bookings in plenty of time. Ferry services can become fully booked very quickly for peak sailings. Don't forget your return journey.
- Choose the best ferry route for your journey. Don't save a few pounds on your ferry crossings to be taken hundreds of miles from your final destination.
- Ensure that you declare your vehicle dimensions correctly. Mistakes at this stage of your booking could make the difference between getting onto the ferry, or being left behind.
- Ensure that you are not carrying extra fuel in jerricans. There are strict regulations that mean you are not allowed to do so. You will also not be able to leave the fuel at the ferry ports due to safety regulations there.
- Ensure that you allow plenty of time to get to the ferry port. There are strict check in times for you to adhere to, and if you get to the ferry ports after these times, then you may be left behind. Ferries are not usually held on their berth to allow late passengers to embark, and will never return to the port to allow you to board.
- Ensure that you declare you are travelling with pets at the time of booking. Most ferry operators will only allow you to travel with pets if you have done so. When you are booking kennels on board, ensure that you choose the correct size at the time of booking, if you are given the choice. You may not get the chance to rectify this once at the port. Check in times with pets are strictly adhered to, so ensure that you leave more than enough time to arrive at the ferry port and check your pet in.
- Most importantly, ensure that you have your passport. If you were to arrive without your passport and any other necessary travel documents, such as visas, then the ferry port check in staff will refuse you shipment. No amount of discussion will change this fact.
